Level 3 Award in First Aid at Work

The Level 3 Award in First Aid at Work (RQF) is aimed for candidates who want to attain knowledge and practical competencies required to deal with a range of workplace first aid solutions. The course addresses the following areas: roles and responsibilities of the First Aider; assessing an incident, recognising signs and symptoms of injury and illness, assisting a casualty who is suffering from major injury and illness, chest injuries, spinal injuries and anaphylaxis.

Vocational Learning encourages candidates to submit naturally occurring evidence from their work environment to demonstrate competency against the practical requirements of the course. You are usually expected to complete this course within 3 days. The course has a 18 guided learning hours requirement. The total qualification time is 22 hours.

Entry Requirements of this First Aid at Work Course

This Level 3 Award in First Aid at Work (RQF) course is open to anyone. You are expected to be at least 14 years old. You will be expected to have basic numeracy, literacy and IT skills in line with national occupational skills for care workers.

You are also expected to have access to the internet, multimedia computer, printer and a word processor that can open and produce Microsoft Word Documents ending with the extension ‘.doc’. Candidates without Microsoft office are advised to consider free software such as Open Office. You, however, need to ensure your documents are saved and submitted for assessment as word documents ending with the extension ‘.doc’?

What it means studying at Level 3?

You will be assessed at A Level standard. There is an expectation that you will have the ability to identify and use relevant understanding, methods and skills to complete tasks and address problems that, while well defined, have a measure of complexity. It includes taking responsibility for initiating and completing tasks and procedures as well as exercising autonomy and judgment. You will be expected to research, reflect an awareness of different perspectives or approaches and use references.

What can l do after completion?

You can go on to complete other qualifications such as the Level 2 Award in Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation and Automated External Defibrillation.

Course Structure of the First Aid at Work Course

To achieve the Level 3 Award in First Aid at Work (RQF) qualification you will be expected to complete the following two units:

Unit 1: Emergency first aid in the workplace

Unit 2: Recognition and management of illness and injury in the workplace


Course Delivery and Support

The Level 3 Award in First Aid at Work course is delivered by either distance, blended learning or as classroom based. You are expected to meet course requirements regardless of the method of delivery.

Distance learning will stretch you as you need to self-motivate and work against the pressures of studying alone.

Candidates studying by either distance or blended learning will need to fully participate in online activities and provide multimedia evidence whenever possible.

On enrolment every candidate will be allocated an assessor who will also be their tutor and the first port of call for all assessments and learning needs. You will have access to resources, coursework, tutorials, events, forums, web conferences, and face-to-face sessions. We regularly host support sessions during the day, night and weekends.

You will be expected to participate in an induction session to fully understand how to use our learning management system (Access), locate resources and your coursework. This induction can either be face-to-face or online. You will need to have a discussion with your assessor to negotiate and agree your learning and assessment plan. You are expected here to discuss about any needs, targets, practical requirements (if applicable) and declare any prior learning you wish to be considered. Your assessor will draft your “Holistic Assessment Plan” which will reflect your needs. The plan will also contain information about assessments, ground rules and expected course end date.

Assessment of this First Aid at Work

The Level 3 Award in First Aid at Work course is assessed by a portfolio of evidence which you have to compile and submit at the end of the course. You will be expected to complete some course work and participate in a number of assessment activities such as recorded discussions.

Your Partnership Responsibilities

Upon enrolment, you will be referred to as a “Learning Partner.” We commit to support you and strive to work in partnership as much as we can.

As a partner, you need to appreciate that we all have to adhere to regulations and quality assurance procedures. Our Learning and Development team have to prove they have delivered the training, given you access to learning opportunities and support. You will, in turn, be expected to demonstrate how you have utilised these learning opportunities, shown development over a period of time and meet all course requirements. Unfortunately, there are no shortcuts. You are enrolling to earn your qualification. All your assessed evidence has to meet both internal and external quality assurance. We expect you to fulfil your partnership duties, which also includes being professional, committed, inclusive, hard working, respecting boundaries and intellectual property.

All learning partners who meet course requirements, learning outcomes and the assessment criteria will be signed off and achieve this qualification. You will get your certificate within 14 days after you have been signed off by our moderators.
